Job Overview
Hire Resolve is currently representing a well-established mining operation in the Northern Cape that is seeking to appoint a highly experienced Engineering Manager. This is a senior leadership role suited to an engineering professional with strong technical expertise, proven management capability, and extensive experience within opencast mining environments.
The successful candidate will be responsible for leading and managing the full engineering function, ensuring that all assets, plant, and infrastructure are operated and maintained safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively. This role plays a critical part in supporting production targets, equipment reliability, and long-term asset sustainability.
Key Responsibilities
The Engineering Manager will take overall accountability for engineering performance across the operation, with responsibilities including but not limited to the following:
Engineering Leadership and Management
- Plan, lead, and manage the engineering department to ensure optimal operational performance.
- Provide strong leadership to engineering teams, fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Ensure alignment between engineering objectives and overall business and production goals.
Compliance and Safety
- Ensure full compliance with all applicable engineering standards, legal requirements, and safety regulations.
- Enforce adherence to Mine Health and Safety Act requirements and company safety policies.
- Drive a proactive safety culture within the engineering and maintenance teams.
Asset and Maintenance Management
- Oversee the safe installation, commissioning, operation, and maintenance of all plant, equipment, buildings, and structures.
- Implement, maintain, and continuously improve an effective maintenance management system.
- Ensure maintenance strategies support equipment availability, reliability, and life-cycle cost optimisation.
Reliability and Performance Improvement
- Analyse condition monitoring data, maintenance feedback, and breakdown trends.
- Identify root causes of failures and define corrective and preventative action plans.
- Drive predictive and planned maintenance strategies to reduce unplanned downtime.
Spare Parts and Inventory Strategy
- Develop and manage spare parts strategies to ensure critical equipment reliability.
- Balance availability of spares with cost control and inventory optimisation.
Financial and Budget Control
- Prepare, manage, and control the engineering budget.
- Monitor expenditure and report on cost performance against budget.
- Identify cost-saving opportunities without compromising safety or operational integrity.
Minimum Requirements
Candidates applying for this position must meet the following essential requirements:
- Grade 12 (Matric Certificate).
- Degree or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Electrical Engineering.
- GCC Mines & Works Certificate (essential and non-negotiable).
- Minimum of 5 years’ post-GCC experience as an Engineer within a mining environment.
- Extensive experience in opencast mining operations.
- Proven working knowledge of predictive, planned, and preventative maintenance systems.
- Sound understanding of crushing, screening, and conveying systems, including fine powder milling and packaging processes.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
The ideal candidate will demonstrate strong technical and operational competence in the following areas:
- Heavy mining plant and equipment maintenance.
- Condition monitoring and reliability engineering principles.
- Maintenance planning systems and CMMS platforms.
- Engineering risk assessment and compliance management.
- Budgeting, cost control, and financial reporting.
- Engineering project oversight and contractor management.

Remuneration and Benefits
The client is offering a highly competitive remuneration package based on experience and qualifications, including:
- Salary: R1.4 million – R1.5 million per annum
