Role Overview
The Cashier position focuses on managing all customer transactions at the point of sale. Key Responsibilities and Duties
The Cashier will be responsible for handling a wide range of daily operational tasks. These responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:
You will accurately process customer purchases by scanning items, establishing prices, and calculating totals using cash registers, scanners, or other point-of-sale systems. Ensuring that every transaction is recorded correctly is essential to maintaining financial accuracy and accountability.
Handling payments is a core duty of the role. You will receive payments in the form of cash or card, ensure that the correct amount is processed, and issue accurate change where required. At the beginning of each shift, you will count the cash drawer to confirm that the opening balance is correct and that there is sufficient change available. At the end of trading periods, you will assist in balancing the till and resolving any discrepancies.
You will sort, count, and wrap notes and coins according to company procedures, ensuring that cash is handled securely and responsibly at all times. Periodic balance sheets and transaction records must be maintained accurately to support daily and monthly reporting.
Customer service is a key element of this role. You will greet customers as they enter the store or approach the checkout, respond to basic queries, and ensure that customers feel welcomed and assisted. Issuing receipts, refunds, credits, or exchanges must be done professionally and in line with TWK Agri policies.
You will also be responsible for bagging, boxing, or wrapping merchandise and preparing packages for shipment or customer collection when required. Care must be taken to handle products properly, especially items that may be fragile, heavy, or agriculturally sensitive.
Maintaining a clean and orderly checkout area is another important responsibility. This includes keeping the counter tidy, ensuring equipment is clean and functional, and following health and safety standards. A neat checkout area contributes to both customer confidence and operational efficiency.
Beyond the checkout, you will assist with general store duties. These include stocking shelves, marking prices on shelves and items, and ensuring that merchandise is displayed correctly. You may also be required to participate in stock takes, counting items accurately and reporting discrepancies to supervisors or management.
Required Qualifications and Experience
To be considered for this role, candidates must meet the following minimum requirements:
- Matric / Grade 12 qualification
- Computer literacy, with the ability to operate basic systems and point-of-sale equipment
- Previous cashier experience, which will be a strong advantage
- Ability to work confidently and accurately with money
- Ability to interact positively with customers in a retail environment
While extensive experience is not always required, a willingness to learn and follow procedures carefully is essential for success in this role.
