Job Overview
A well-established and reputable construction group is offering an exciting opportunity within its Civil Department for a highly experienced Senior Site Agent – Civils. This is a site-based role suited to a professional who thrives in demanding project environments and has a proven track record in managing large-scale civil infrastructure developments.
The successful candidate will take full responsibility for the planning, coordination, and execution of complex civil projects. These projects may include earthworks, road construction, stormwater systems, bulk services, and structural components. Reporting directly to the Contracts Manager, the role requires strong leadership, technical expertise, and commercial awareness to ensure projects are delivered safely, on time, within budget, and in full compliance with contractual and statutory requirements.
Role Purpose
The primary purpose of this role is to lead and manage site operations across major civil construction projects while ensuring high standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. The position requires a balance of hands-on site management and strategic oversight, ensuring that all aspects of project delivery are aligned with organisational and client expectations.
Key Responsibilities
Project Planning and Execution
You will be responsible for planning, managing, and executing civil construction works in accordance with approved project programmes, engineering drawings, and technical specifications. This includes ensuring that all activities are properly scheduled and aligned with project timelines.
You will also develop and manage detailed construction programmes, including baseline schedules, look-ahead planning, and resource-loaded programmes using tools such as CCS or MS Project.
Site Leadership and Team Management
A critical aspect of the role is leading and coordinating multidisciplinary site teams. This includes Site Agents, General Foremen, Engineers, and other site personnel.
You will provide direction, mentorship, and performance management to ensure that teams operate efficiently and deliver work to the highest standards. Building a strong, motivated, and accountable team culture on-site is essential for success in this role.
Management of Civil Works
You will oversee a wide range of civil construction activities, including earthworks, layerworks, road construction, stormwater systems, bulk services, and structural elements.
Ensuring that all work is executed according to technical standards and project specifications will be a key responsibility.
Compliance and Quality Assurance
The role requires strict adherence to construction legislation, including Occupational Health and Safety requirements, environmental regulations, and contract conditions.
You will implement and monitor quality assurance and quality control systems, including inspections, test plans (ITPs), snagging processes, and project close-out procedures to ensure that deliverables meet required standards.
Resource and Cost Management
You will manage labour, plant, materials, and subcontractors to achieve productivity, cost-efficiency, and quality targets.
Monitoring site costs, tracking production outputs, and ensuring accurate reporting and forecasting will be essential to maintaining project profitability.
Subcontractor and Stakeholder Management
Managing subcontractor performance is a key component of the role, including ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and integration of SMMEs where applicable.
You will also maintain strong working relationships with clients, consultants, suppliers, and community stakeholders, ensuring effective communication and collaboration throughout the project lifecycle.
Risk and Incident Management
You will proactively identify and manage risks, incidents, and potential crisis situations to ensure continuity of operations.
This includes implementing mitigation strategies and ensuring that all safety protocols are followed to protect personnel and project integrity.
Tender Support and Continuous Improvement
The role includes contributing to tendering and work acquisition processes by providing constructability input, site insights, and lessons learned from previous projects.
You will also play a role in driving continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance efficiency, quality, and performance across projects.
Minimum Requirements
Education and Professional Registration
Candidates must be professionally registered as a Construction Manager with a recognised professional body such as South African Council for the Project and Construction Management Professions, or be in the process of obtaining registration.
Experience
A minimum of 10 years’ experience in project planning within large civil or multidisciplinary engineering environments is required.
In addition, candidates must have at least 5 to 8 years of experience working as a Site Agent or Direct Site Manager on major civil infrastructure projects.
Proven experience in managing complex civil works, including earthworks, roads, services, and structural components, is essential. Strong exposure to site execution, subcontractor management, and contractual compliance is also required.
Advantageous Qualifications and Skills
A Degree or Diploma in Civil Engineering or a related field will be highly beneficial.
Experience working under standard forms of contract such as GCC, NEC, FIDIC, or JBCC will provide a strong advantage.
Candidates with sound knowledge of industry standards such as COLTO, COTO, SANRAL, and SANS will be well positioned for this role.
Experience with digital construction tools, including MS Project, GPS systems, Total Station equipment, and mobile QA/QC platforms, is also advantageous.
Exposure to labour-intensive public sector projects and SMME development initiatives will further strengthen your application.
