Role Overview
Dis-Chem Pharmacies is seeking a Post Basic Qualified Pharmacist Assistant to join their Westville branch. This role is focused on delivering safe, accurate, and compliant pharmaceutical support services while ensuring high-quality customer care in a retail pharmacy environment.
The position plays a key role in supporting the responsible pharmacist in meeting patient medicine-related needs and ensuring full compliance with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC) regulations.
Core Purpose of the Role
To provide pharmaceutical support services by assisting with dispensing, stock control, prescription management, and patient care while ensuring legal compliance, accuracy, and professional service delivery within a community pharmacy setting.
Key Responsibilities
1. Pharmaceutical Care & Dispensing Support
- Assist with the sale of Schedule 1 and Schedule 2 medicines
- Support the preparation, compounding, and manipulation of non-sterile medicines under supervision
- Assist in manufacturing and re-packaging of medicines according to SOPs
- Read and interpret prescriptions under pharmacist supervision
- Ensure accurate selection, labelling, and dispensing of medicines
- Provide correct instructions to patients regarding medicine use
2. Prescription & Patient Management
- Accurately capture and verify patient information on the system
- Maintain patient profiles and update records as required
- Assist with chronic, HIV/AIDS, and oncology medication authorisations
- Follow up on prescriptions, appointments, and patient queries
- Ensure correct handling of rejected medical aid claims and corrections
3. Stock Control & Pharmacy Operations
- Assist with ordering and receiving stock (Schedules 1–6 under supervision)
- Ensure proper storage and FEFO (First Expiry First Out) principles
- Monitor and report low or out-of-stock items
- Participate in bi-annual stock takes
- Assist with stock accuracy, cash control, and asset management
4. Compliance & Legal Responsibilities
- Work strictly within SAPC regulations and Medicines Act requirements
- Ensure all prescriptions are checked and signed by a pharmacist
- Maintain compliance with pharmacy standard operating procedures
- Support audit readiness and regulatory inspections
- Ensure accurate handling of scheduled medicines
5. Customer Service & Patient Support
- Assist patients at the dispensary and front shop
- Provide health-related information to promote wellness
- Explain medical aid processes and medication costs to patients
- Deliver professional, ethical, and friendly service at all times
- Support customer queries and resolve issues efficiently
6. Administrative Duties
- Capture prescription details accurately into pharmacy systems
- Process medical aid claims and related documentation
- Correct prescription errors and manage system updates
- Maintain accurate patient and medicine records
- Communicate stock or prescription issues to the dispensary manager
Minimum Requirements
- Grade 12 / Matric
- Basic Pharmacist Assistant qualification (Post Basic Qualified)
- Registered with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC)
Advantageous Requirements
- Experience in retail or FMCG pharmacy environment
- Experience with Unisolv, SAP, or E-Scripting systems
- Knowledge of oncology, chronic medication, and family planning medicines
- Additional language (beyond English)
- Pharmacy-related retail experience
