Role Overview

Core Purpose of the Role
The primary objective of this role is to develop and manage fully integrated project schedules that support successful project delivery. The role also supports decision-making by providing accurate planning data, delay analysis, and scenario forecasting to project leadership teams.
Key Responsibilities
1. Integrated Project Scheduling
You will develop and maintain detailed project schedules covering all phases of construction projects, including planning, procurement, execution, and close-out stages.
These schedules must be fully integrated across disciplines such as engineering, procurement, construction, and commercial operations to ensure alignment across all project functions.
2. Baseline Programme Development and Monitoring
You will establish baseline programmes at the start of projects and continuously monitor progress against contractual milestones.
Any deviations from the baseline must be analysed, reported, and supported with recommendations for corrective action.
3. Critical Path and Schedule Analysis
A key function of this role is analysing critical paths, delays, trends, and variances in project timelines.
You will identify schedule risks and provide detailed impact assessments, including recommendations to mitigate delays and improve efficiency.
4. Cost, Resource, and Progress Integration
You will integrate cost data, resource allocation, and physical progress into project schedules.
This includes performing earned value analysis to measure project performance and forecast future outcomes based on current progress trends.
5. Delay and Claims Support
The role includes conducting delay analysis and supporting contractual claims related to time extensions.
You will assist in preparing documentation for dispute resolution, contractual submissions, and justification of project delays.
6. Reporting and Performance Dashboards
You will prepare weekly and monthly progress reports for management and stakeholders.
These reports will include forecasts, performance metrics, risk assessments, and executive-level dashboards to support decision-making.
7. Site Verification and Progress Validation
You will conduct regular site visits to verify physical progress against planned schedules.
This ensures that reported progress accurately reflects actual site conditions and supports planning accuracy.
8. Planning Coordination Across Teams
You will coordinate planning inputs from multiple departments including engineering, procurement, commercial, and construction teams.
This ensures consistency and alignment across all project planning activities.
9. Mentorship and Planning Standards
You will mentor junior planners and support the implementation of standardised planning methodologies across projects.
This includes promoting best practices and continuous improvement in scheduling processes.
Minimum Requirements
- National Diploma or Degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or Project Management
- Minimum 10 years’ experience in project planning on large civil or multidisciplinary projects
- Strong experience in integrated project scheduling and programme management
- Proven ability to link cost, resources, and risk to project timelines
Advantageous Requirements
- Postgraduate qualification in Project Planning or Construction Management
- Professional membership (PMSA, SACPCMP, or ECSA)
- Experience on infrastructure, renewable energy, or heavy civil projects
- Experience mentoring planners or implementing planning systems across multiple projects
- Proficiency in planning tools such as Primavera P6 or MS Project
- Experience with business intelligence or data visualisation tools
