Role Overview
A leading engineering and infrastructure organisation is seeking a highly skilled Master Installation Technician (Master Installation Electrician) to join its specialised industrial projects team. This role is designed for an experienced electrical professional who is capable of overseeing complex, high-risk electrical installations within industrial and hazardous environments.
The successful candidate will take full technical responsibility for installation compliance, certification, and leadership on site, ensuring that all electrical work meets stringent regulatory, safety, and quality standards.
Core Purpose of the Role
The primary objective of this position is to ensure the safe, compliant, and technically correct execution of advanced electrical installations within industrial environments such as petrochemical, oil, gas, and energy infrastructure projects.
This includes supervising installation teams, certifying completed work, troubleshooting complex electrical faults, and ensuring strict adherence to SANS 10142-1 and other applicable regulations.
Key Responsibilities
1. Electrical Installation Oversight & Certification
- Oversee and verify all complex electrical installations on industrial sites
- Ensure compliance with SANS 10142-1 and relevant regulatory frameworks
- Inspect completed electrical systems for safety, accuracy, and compliance
- Issue Certificates of Compliance (CoC) for qualifying installations
- Ensure all installations meet both client specifications and statutory requirements
2. Industrial & Hazardous Area Compliance
- Manage electrical installations within hazardous and high-risk environments
- Ensure strict adherence to hazardous area classification standards
- Apply intrinsic safety principles in all relevant installations
- Conduct risk-based assessments prior to and during execution of work
3. Technical Leadership & Site Supervision
- Lead on-site electrical teams and subcontractors
- Provide technical direction and mentorship to installation teams
- Ensure correct interpretation and execution of engineering designs
- Monitor daily site activities to ensure quality and safety compliance
- Resolve technical challenges during installation phases
4. Fault Finding & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and resolve complex electrical faults in industrial systems
- Perform detailed technical investigations into system failures
- Implement corrective actions to restore system functionality
- Ensure minimal downtime in operational environments
5. Health, Safety & Compliance Management
- Enforce strict adherence to occupational health and safety standards
- Ensure compliance with site safety procedures and regulations
- Conduct safety checks and enforce correct use of PPE
- Promote a strong safety-first culture within installation teams
6. Project Execution Support
- Support delivery of large-scale industrial electrical projects
- Collaborate with engineers, project managers, and site supervisors
- Ensure installation timelines are met without compromising quality
- Assist in commissioning and final system validation processes
7. Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate installation records and compliance documentation
- Complete technical reports, inspection records, and certification documents
- Ensure traceability of all electrical work performed on site
- Provide feedback on site progress, risks, and technical issues
Minimum Requirements
- Registered Master Installation Electrician (MIE) with the Department of Employment and Labour
- Proven experience in industrial electrical installations
- Valid driver’s licence and reliable transport
- Strong understanding of electrical regulations and standards
Experience Requirements
- Extensive experience in industrial sectors such as petrochemical, oil & gas, or heavy industry
- Demonstrated ability to manage complex electrical installation projects
- Experience working with hazardous area electrical systems is essential
- Strong background in inspection, testing, and commissioning of electrical systems
Technical Knowledge Required
- Deep understanding of SANS 10142-1 electrical installation standards
- Knowledge of hazardous area classification and intrinsic safety systems
- Competence in industrial electrical infrastructure design and installation
- Ability to interpret technical drawings and engineering specifications
